Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is the biochemical precursor of all nitrogen containing sugars.  Hence, it is the precursor of the glycosaminoglycans (gags) that are components of normal synovial fluid and are essential for cartilage and joint health.  The gags present in normal human joint fluid are chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, heparan sulfate, keratan sulfate, and hyaluronan.
